Tablero – La Tabla

Tablero was one of last year’s nicer surprises as far as
I’m concerned, so it’s really good to get this back in stock. La Tabla are a young band, clearly intent upon carving out their own path within the tradition of Cuban dance music. At its best, and some of this is really exceptional, this is fresh, punchy and energetic, without a hint of glitz. The percussion department wants for nothing, tumbaos are jazzy, bass is funky and the horn riffs well conceived.
On No Te Pongas Negativa, a shouted chorus, so definitive of ’90’s Timba, makes a rare and nostalgic reappearance. Much of the material is very original, while on El Panadero, good arrangements and convincing vocals courtesy of Valentín Martinto Borrego, make this fairly standard song appealing.
My only quip is that vocal harmonies and melody at times veer too close to MOR pop.The sometimes antagonistic tendencies on the recording are perhaps expressed by the choice of guest vocalists. From the pop side, Adraín Berazaín leads on Cenicienta (Cindarella) while Irakere’s Oscar Valdés brings a completely uncontrived vocal style to La Habana Te Enreda. Where these elements merge, No Se Lo Digas A Nadie, builds from a lightweight intro into the heaviest, funkiest montuno. It’s well worth the wait.
I’m hoping this band has a future and will be looking our for more. Highly recommended.
