En Directo Desde El Patio De Mi Casa – NG La Banda
En Directo Desde El Patio De Mi Casa is the last Timba CD from NG La Banda, really, as what
followed, while not always unsuccessful, generally sounds like increasingly banal efforts to break out of the Latin market. This was recorded live, apparently in el Tosco’s back yard in late 1995. Must have been fun. After their last few CD’s in which inspiring dance music was sparse, En Directo represents a return to form. In the context of what was to follow, this is the swan song of the band that created Timba. Thankfully, it’s also a high quality DAT recording.
La banda que mandaba hits the ground talking, but it’s live so there are mitigating circumstances. The protracted preamble gives way to Papá Changó, a tour de force which reminds of everything NG was- beautifully conceived and constructed, Jazz infused Afro-Cuban dance music, played with terrifying proficiency. Overall, the album has several sublime moments and not even the ballads hum that badly. Banquera Del Amor, La Apretadora and the politically incorrect, uberfunky El Baile Chino are other high points for me. A batir el huevo!
