After “Me Sube La Fiebre,” came “Hey, You, Loca!” This second proto-Timba outing from

Charanga Habanera is not a complete departure from the first. Not least because it contains several upgrade rerecordings. These include the title track of the previous album, here renamed Fiebre De Amor, but sadly, not Extraños Ateos. The music has in many ways made innovative breaks with tradition yet as far as I can tell with my half-baked Spanish, the lyrics are not yet the acrid social commentary they would become.
In the credits you’ll find some of the usual behind the scenes movers of the time. Lionel Limonta would later be integral to the greatest years of Bamboleo, then Azucar Negra. He is credited as an author on both this and “Me Sube La Fiebre.” Giraldo Piloto too, also Manolo Gonzalez. The latter, a young gynaecologist student, would soon become the renowned “Medico de la Salsa.” Giraldo Piloto, pioneering percussionist of NG La Banda, would form his own band, Klimax. David Calzado and keyboard player Juan Carlos Gonzalez’ also contributed greatly to the material. I suspect it’s primarily their arrangements which determined the revolutionary nature of the band’s sound.
The sound is unique, one that most salsa dancers in the UK met with consternation. Empty dance floors and disapproving glances at any DJ brave or misguided enough to play it ensured that most never did so twice. For years, conservatism pushed this music out of the clubs and into people’s front rooms.
The figures mentioned above were prominent among a new generation of pioneers for whom the old styles were inadequate to express contemporary reality or exercise their academy learned skills. By now, loss of economic support from Russia was really biting Cuba hard. One logistical thing I can’t quite get my head around is how people living on 2/3 the recommended daily calorie intake got to dance at the pace some of these songs reach.
There are a couple of Charangas that hark back to the band’s original incarnation. They seem dressed wrong for this party but flute and strings add much to this album. Check the Charanga break, added like a quote of an era, that bridges the intro (cuerpo) into the montuno on Tremenda Atmosphera. Los Van Van did something similar on Barriste Con El years later, and it really works for me. Best of the best for me are- El Verbo del Amor, Concentrate en mi, Fiebre de Amor, and Hey, you, Loca! But that’s being picky. It’s classic stuff, enjoy.
